Assam : Four ULFA (I) militants held in Dhemaji

Police have arrested four suspected ULFA (I) militants from north Dhemaji area along Assam-Arunachal border. Acting on a specific intelligence input, Dhemaji police on Thursday launched an operation in the area and managed to nab four cadres of the proscribed outfit. The arrested ULFA (I) cadres have been identified as Parthajeet Konwar, 21, Mrinal Phukan ,18 of Dhemaji, Janak Baruah,18, of Laohal and Uday Duwara , 23, of Golaghat.

The police also seized a motorbike, four mobile handsets, ULFA (I)’s flag, sharp weapon and a roll of black cloths besides some incriminating documents from their possession. Police said that the ULFA militants used the hilly forest at Laipuliya of North Dhemaji area along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border as safe hideout and tried to strengthen their base in the district. Team of police and security forces led by Dhemaji SP Rakesh Reddy following intelligence input cordoned off the area and nabbed the rebels after conducting combing operation.

Police are suspecting that there may be more ULFA (I) cadres in the district, who are using inter-state boundary area as safe hideout and trying to carry out subversive activities in the run up to Independent Day. A top police official said that the team of ULFA (I) militant sneaked into the district to regain their strength after a major crackdown in Myanmar.
