The Government of India has cancelled the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card of author Atish Taseer, calling Narendra Modi a ‘divider in chief’. The Union Home Ministry spokesman said that while submitting his PIO application, Atish Taseer hid that his father was of Pakistani origin. Due to this, the OCI card of Atish has been cancelled. According to a report, the ministry was quoted as saying that Atish had not stated that his father Salman Nasir was a Pakistani citizen.

The spokesperson said that Taseer was given an opportunity to register his reply / objection regarding his PIO / OCI card but he did not take any notice of this notice. After this, Atish Ali Taseer was no longer eligible to be an OCI card holder under the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955. He apparently could not meet the basic needs and hid the information.

The Government, under Rule 7A of the OCI card, states that any person or his parents or grandparents or great-great-grandmothers are citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh or a country which is scheduled in the official gazette of the Government of India. So he is not eligible for the Overseas Citizen of India card. According to sources, the notice was sent to Taseer by the government in September. In this, he was given 21 days to reply. Taseer received the notice on the 20th day. After this, a reply was sent by Taseer within 24 hours.

Responding to the Home Ministry’s tweet, Taseer posted a screenshot of the response from the New York Indian Consulate. Taseer tweeted that this is not correct. Consul General’s cognizance here on my answer. I got 24 hours to reply, not a full 21 days. Earlier, I was not given any information from the Ministry. Aatish was issued an OCI card on the basis of being the child of an Indian citizen. He was issued the first PIO card in 1999 and subsequently in 2016. Taseer’s mother Tavleen Singh is a senior journalist. Atish Taseer also has a British passport and a US green card.
