Manipur Education, Labour & Employment Minister, Thokchom Radheshyam was felicitated on Friday for receiving prestigious Honorary Degree of Doctorate of Science in Political Science conferred by European University of Brcko District (EUBO) of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Organised by the Departments of Education with Manipur International University (MIU), the felicitation ceremony was held at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Imphal. It may be mentioned that the Honorary Degree was awarded by the Chancellor, Professor Dr. Nedeljko Stankovic at Belgrade City of Serbia on  December 6, 2019.

Speaking on the occasion, former Vice Chancellor, Manipur University, Prof. H. Nandakumar Sarma said that it is a moment of pride that such a prestigious award has been conferred to a person from Manipur. Lauding the services and works of Dr. Thokchom Radheshyam as the Education Minister, he said that tremendous improvement and changes is visible in the school and higher education sector.

Prof Nandakumar also stated that many colleges have been converted into government colleges specially the two women’s colleges the S. Kula Women’s College and Waikhom Mani Girls’ College. With such initiatives being taken up, the teachers should give full support in the learning of students. Among the Literacy Rate of Indian States in Census 2011, Manipur stands at 16th position and this ranking needs to be improved in the next census, he also said.

In raking of universities across the world, United States of America is top ranked and among the South East Asian countries, China tops the ranking list. India needs to give more emphasis in the education sector to secure a place among the world’s top ranking university. Education, he stressed is the backbone for growth and development of a nation, Prof Nandakumar added.

Dr. Thokchom Radheshyam in his speech shared the experience of his short stint in Bosnia and Herzegovina serving as the Regional Chief of Human Rights in United Nations’ Mission in 2001-2002. He said that education enables a person to inculcate tolerance, respect and appreciate the rich diversity of different cultures. He also opined that education is not only to acquire a degree or diploma but to gain knowledge and imbibed in oneself the sense of service, connecting with each other and sacrifice for the motherland  and work for the betterment of the society.

He said that it is truly a moment of pride that such a prestigious Honorary Degree is being conferred to a Manipuri from such a tiny state of Manipur by a European University. He also said that it is recognition of the talent, work culture and hard work of a Manipuri and expressed his gratitude for the honour.
