Ruling BJP’s proposed pro CAA rally in Imphal on December 29 to create awareness on the Act has received strong reaction from CSOs and political parties.

Muslim based CSOs and opposition Congress have already cautioned  that the rally  would create unrest in the state urging the state government  to cancel it.

Joining the chorus, Manipur People Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 (MANPAC) on Friday alleged that the planned rally was against the wishes of indigenous people of the state. By organising pro-CAA rally, the state government has contradicted its own stand against CAB 2019 which has now been implemented as an Act, MANPAC leaders alleged, at a press conference held here on Friday. MANPAC convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar pointed out the difference in objections raised against CAA by people in other parts of the country with that of the NE region.
He said that the anti-CAA agitations being witnessed in other parts of the country, particularly in the major cities, were with the allegations that the Act was anti-secular and an insult to the secular structure of Indian Constitution.
However, people of the NE region protested against CAA as the implementation of the Act in the region is a direct attack to the survival of the indigenous people, he said. He then appealed to the state government to stop the rally in Imphal while asserting that it will insult the indigenous people of the region.
The convenor said that the state government must remember that the people of the state have protesting against the Act ever since it was a bill and yet to be introduced in the Parliament sensing its adverse impact. The Centre had allayed the apprehension by extending ILP system to keep the state outside the ambit of the Act like other states where the system is being applied. However, the people were yet to get their apprehensions cleared as the implementation of the ILP system is in the initial stage.
The state is yet to frame the rules and regulations for effective implementation of the system even though the Centre had notified it, he said adding that the need of the hour is to concentrate on making the ILP, a system that would fully protect the indigenous people from the possible impact CAA, he added. The Centre extended ILP system in the state only to allay the people’s fear of the adverse impact of CAA and it would be too early to predict that the state is fully protected from the Act.
Instead of celebrating and supporting the CAA, there was the need on the part of the state government as well as people of the state to find a way to ensure fully protection of the state from the evil impact of CAA, the convenor said.
